This was the first derby match between these two teams this season. Atletico, equally being a solid team, Real Madrid needed to show their best strength and stamina against their strongest opponent team in Laliga on this day. Last year, on 24 September 2023, Real Madrid lost to Atletico Madrid by 1-3 in a La Liga game.
Rodrygo and Vinicius were forwards, and Modric was also in the starting lineup. Mbappe being injured sadly, he wouldn’t be joining this competitive Madrid derby.
The game started quite well for Real Madrid. Within the first minute, from the right flank, Carvajal delivered a super ball into the box for Rodrygo, but Rodrygo could not reach it, and the ball rolled out the left sideline.
If Rodryogo had trapped that ball and gotten a powerful shot, it would have been extremely dangerous for Atletico.
In the 4th minute, Valverde passed the ball to Modric, who ran with the ball into the box from the right and passed the ball toward the center for Bellingham. However, Bellingham missed and fell, surrounded by defenders, and the ball was cleared. This could have been a good chance for Real Madrid.
In the 9th minute, an Atletico player entered the box from the left, and coming close to the near post, fired a powerful shot that Courtois blocked, sending the ball out of play. This was Atletico’s first dangerous attempt.
In the 12th minute, Modric received a good pass inside the box from Carvajal, and as he was about to take the shot, a defender kicked the ball away, and the chance was missed. Real Madrid got a corner kick though.
In the 17th minute, Valverde fired a good long shot from outside of the 18-yard line into the goal post, but the keeper, Oblak, could block the ball, and the ball rolled out for a corner.
So far into the 20 minutes, Real Madrid was playing well, pressing into the opponent’s half and having more control of the game, while Atletico was subdued.
In the 26th minute, Vini was fouled by Llorente, an Atletico player, in the center half of the Atletico field. Valverde took a long and powerful shot at the goalpost, but the ball narrowly missed the right pole and went out.
Up until the 34th minute, Real Madrid’s possession was 51% compared to Atletico’s 49%. There had not been many dangerous attacks on goal from either team; the game was mostly played in midfield.
In the 35th minute, Vini passed the ball to Rodrygo from the left corner of the box. Rodrygo, in turn, passed the ball to Bellingham, who was just outside the 18-yard line. Bellingham took a low shot at the post, but Oblak, the keeper, was alert enough and saved his goalpost.
Later, an Atletico defender back passed the ball to the keeper, Oblak, and while Oblak was clearing the ball, Vini rushed in very fast and almost got to the ball, just missing by inches. It was a scary moment for Atletico Madrid.
Modric received a yellow card for a foul in the 40th minute.
In the 45th minute, Rodrygo had the ball inside the left box, and as he moved forward, two defenders blocked his way, and he fell. However, no penalty was awarded.
In the final minute of halftime, Atletico had a corner ball, but Courtois easily caught the headed ball, keeping it safe.
The first half of the game was not as thrilling and competitive as expected. Usually, these derby matches are intense and competitive, but Atletico was quite subdued. Real Madrid pressed high and created just a few chances but failed to convert their few chances into goals. Vini, Valverde, and Bellingham played well and created some chances.
Second Half Highlights
Real Madrid made no changes at halftime, while Atletico introduced Koke. Immediately, Atletico started playing quite an attacking game as if they were in a rush to score a goal.
In the 51st minute, there was a corner kick for Real Madrid. Modric passed the ball to Valverde and got the ball back before crossing it to Rodrygo, who took a shot that narrowly flew over the bar. It was a good attempt.
Atletico continued attacking strongly but hadn’t yet succeeded. They looked like a strong team in the second half, and Real Madrid appeared to lose the momentum they had in the first half.
In the 63rd minute, as Vini rushed with the ball toward the Atletico box, an Atletico defender, Normand, tackled Vini dangerously, and he got a yellow card. A free kick was awarded to Real just inside Atletico’s half.
At the free kick spot, Modric, Rodrygo, and Valverde stood ready, but Modric passed the ball to Vini on the left of the post. Vini beat a defender and crossed the ball into the 6-yard box. Militao, who was a bit away on the right side of the box, tapped the ball and shot it into the goal powerfully. The keeper, Oblak, was stunned, the ball was inside the net. What a superb goal, at last! Finally, the long wait was over for Real Madrid fans worldwide!
After this goal, there was some problem with the fans of Atletico behind Courtois’s goalpost. They threw all sorts of things in the box area of Courtois, and disrupted the play. Courtois complained to the referee, and after discussions with both coaches, the referee decided to stop the game. The disruption lasted for about 20 minutes.
The game was stopped about the 69th minute of the game.
In the 73rd minute, Vini got the ball from Valverde in the middle of the opponent’s half and he rushed toward the 18-yard line. Though he was surrounded by many opponent players, he managed to take his left foot shot at the goal from just about the 18-yard line. For sure, it was a good shot, but it landed in the hands of the keeper which he blocked and the ball rolled away out of line for a corner kick. But it was a good try by Vini on solo.
Correa, the Atletico player, took a goal shot in the 78th minute, but the ball was wide and rolled out of the left post. So far, Real Madrid had a total of 8 shots while Atletico had a total of 7 shots.
Later, Atletico’s Leno received a pass on the left flank and ran towards Real’s goal, beating Carvajal and Militao. He took a shot, but Courtois palmed the ball over the bar for a corner, preventing a dangerous situation for Real.
By the 82nd minute of the game, Real Madrid had 4 shots on target, while Atletico had just 1. This reflected the performance of the two teams.
Modric was replaced by Vazquez in the 86th minute, and a minute later, Endrick came on for Vini.
In the 89th minute, Endric led a counterattack. He took his powerful shot as he was running a couple of yards away from the 18-yard line, but the ball went off the left post. It was a good try by Endrick as he is very good at this kind of distance goal shot.
Atletico was awarded a free kick a couple of yards away from 18-yard line in the 90th minute of the game. Correa was fouled by Tchouameni in this danger zone. The free kick was taken by Griezman, and the ball went over the crossbar just a few inches above, and the danger was avoided.
Rodrygo was substituted for Fran Garcia in the final minutes of the game.
An extra time of 8 minutes was added to this game.
There was constant pressure on the goalpost of Real Madrid by Atletico about the 94th minute of the game. Once an opponent player was able to just kick the ball by the nearpost of the right, but Courtois was able to block that ball and avoid the danger. Atletico got a corner.
In the 96th minute, Correa got a super pass ball ahead of the Madrid defenders. He shot like a bullet, got the ball, and beat Militao and Courtois, and the ball dwindled into the goalpost of Madrid. At first, there was an offside doubt, but the official later approved the goal as valid. Thus, in the extra time, Atletico was able to equalize the goal difference. In the last 10 to 15 minutes, Atletico had been pressing, and something like this was going to come out as Madrid had not been able to create some good attacks and counterattacks.
Atletico player, Llorente, received a straight red card as he stepped on the foot of Fran Garcia in the 98th minute.
A final attack from Madrid ended with a clash of heads between Tchouameni and an Atletico player, after which the referee blew the final whistle.
Real Madrid played better in the first half, and in the second half, at times, Atletico Madrid pressed hard, and finally, they could score a goal. Real Madrid looked weak and fumbling; there was no organized attack and even some attacks were not much pressing enough. No players did shine in this match I would say, all of them seemed average. Rodrygo was totally lost in the game, and he was hardly making a good contribution.
